Wealthy Black shipowner, merchant, and Pan-Africanist who built his own fleet of ships and established trade routes between America and Sierra Leone. He was the wealthiest African American of his era. He used his own ships to transport free Black settlers to Africa. He built shipping infrastructure from nothing — routes, vessels, cargo logistics — when no one would let a Black man near a port.
