Improved Edison’s light bulb by inventing the carbon filament that made electric lighting practical and long-lasting. He drafted the patent drawings for Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone. Son of escaped slaves, he served in the Union Navy and became one of the original “Edison Pioneers.” He made other people’s inventions actually work — better, faster, more reliably.
