Pioneered the blood bank system and developed techniques for storing blood plasma that saved thousands of lives during World War II. He directed the first American Red Cross Blood Bank. He found what was wrong in the system — literally, the lifeblood — and fixed it. Tragically, the blood segregation policies he fought against may have contributed to his own death.
