Harlem Renaissance sculptor who shaped raw clay into powerful portraits of Black dignity. Her 16-foot sculpture The Harp (inspired by “Lift Every Voice and Sing”) was the most popular attraction at the 1939 World’s Fair. She founded the Savage Studio of Arts and Crafts, teaching a generation of Black artists. She took raw material and shaped it into art on the front end — for the public to see.
