Abstract expressionist painter and the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1972). She was 80 years old. She converted inspiration from nature, space exploration, and color theory into dazzling mosaic-like canvases. A retired schoolteacher who became a master artist, she converted the world she saw into the art she felt.
